What is this template for?

This template is designed to illustrate how you can leverage tree-testing to evaluate your web architecture or your menu structure. It helps you gather feedback on where real users would expect to find certain categories within your navigation menu. The insights from this test can help you improve your site’s architecture and help you understand users’ expectations when navigating your website, allowing you to implement a menu structure that meets user expectations and, thus, increases customer satisfaction without the need for a moderator.

What type of questions do we have in the template?

The template includes a range of e-commerce-focused questions that cover:

Instructions: Participants are explained the goal of the test and what they will be asked to do.

Tree-test task: Users are provided with an item and are asked to use the tree to select where they would expect to find/would like to have the provided item, expressing their thoughts out-loud.• Rating scales: Participants rate different aspects of their experience, such as ease of product search, clarity of product information, and the checkout process.

What type of results can I get from this template?

You’ll receive actionable insights specific to menu optimization and web architecture. This includes feedback on how easy it is for users to locate the “correct” placement for the category/item provided, as well as the ability to understand users’ expectations and, therefore, rethink your navigation menu structure and apply a user-centered organization to your web architecture. You can also gather qualitative feedback by adding verbal or write-in questions, allowing users to explain why they selected the option they chose helping you understand their line of thinking, to optimize the overall shopping experience.

How can I use this template?

You can use this template to assess the intuitiveness of your website’s architecture and menu’s organization by having users locate the items you propose to them. Send the test to participants( BYOU) or use our panel to recruit the right participants. After the test, you’ll get detailed results, including user feedback on search and navigation, which you can use to improve your site’s architecture and menu structure.

You would just have to substitute the proposed item and replicate your site’s menu on the tree test, and you can add verbal or written follow-up questions to better understand the user logic behind their decisions. You can decide if you want to have a “correct” option, or you can leave it open for users to provide you with their most logical place.
